DU Geography and Environmental Studies
BACKGROUND
Geography and
Environmental Studies is an intellectual discipline with very broad scope
and depth. It enhances our knowledge of the earth we live in and broadens our
view of the physical and biological environments, human societies and their
spatial interactions, and utilize both environmental science and social
science perspectives. In addition, the study of Geography and
Environmental Studies provides students with effective tools such as
cartography, Geographic Information Systems and quantitative and qualitative
methods to analyse processes that influence the environment.
The Department
of Geography and Environmental Studies, is one of the first and the oldest
Department in Dilla University, Ethiopia. The dep’t traces its origin in
1996/ 1989 E.C/ when the University was first established as College
of Teachers Education and Health Sciences. Since then, the department has
produced a significant pool of highly trained and skilled professionals who
have continued to play a significant role in the country’s development and
beyond. Furthermore, the alumni of the department are employed in most sectors
of the economy in the country and some becomes already successful
entrepreneurs.
The department intends
to maintain its position in preparing students for jobs in the public and
private sectors that deal with environmental and social research, planning,
development and management activities, among others.
VISION, MISSION and GOALs
VISION
The department aspires
to
be:
a centre of academic
excellence in various fields of Geography and Environmental
studies which incorporate physical, human and Environmental issues in
addition to the application of GIS & Remote Sensing in building basis for
socio-economic development of the country by producing qualified and competent
citizens.
MISSION
The missions of the
programme are:
- Implementation of the New Education and training Policy
of the Country which demands academically qualified professional for both
the undergraduate & postgraduate programs.
- Producing academically qualified experts who can work
in teaching, research, consultancy and outreach services
- Implementation of Ethiopia’s short and long
socio-economic development plans by producing the necessary skilled
manpower in both quality and quantity for the country’s development.
GOALS
The programme:
- Devoted to promote their capacities and desires to
solve problems in the areas related with their field of study.
- Trains highly qualified Geography and
environmental studies professionals and teacher educators
- Conducts high quality research on relevant issues.
- Provide optimum community service
- Conducts high quality professional training.
